First Tooth Gone!

The moment that Mary had been waiting for forever (ok, for about six months, ever since one of her best friends lost HER tooth) has finally arrived!!! Her first tooth has finally come off!!! (Thanks to some vigorous brushing from mommy dearest- it was ver loose and needed some help…) I have never seen anyone as excited about a lost tooth. She couldn’t wait to tell her friends…

Tooth fairy ritual

In Anglophonic cultures, children will traditionally places a lost tooth under his or her pillow before going to sleep. In the morning the child finds a coin, small banknote, or a present in the place of the tooth. The child is typically told that the tooth fairy came during the night and exchanged the tooth for the gift.

What to do about the “gift?” Jack says, “Don’t screw it up.” I took it to mean that I not wake her up when I do the “exchange” underneath the pillow or that I NOT forget to do it altogether.

Well, I was sort of prepared for this. I have a “special” coin, a Susan B. Anthony US dollar coin that is not in circulation much. So, Mary is not familiar with a coin like this and I would be able to tell her that it is a Tooth Fairy coin.

I also told Mary that the Tooth Fairy may only come for the FIRST tooth (Who wants to be doing this ritual another 19 times???!!!!).

I might relent and do this Tooth Fairy business a few more times— Won’t you want to see this happy face again?
