Pinay mom parenting her Caucasian/Filipino daughter in suburban America.
Much as I do not want to use my blog to rant on anything, I just have to do it…
Thanks to Mary’s best friend and her mom who had Mary over at their house for a playdate, I had the Sunday afternoon all to myself. After dropping her off, I stopped by at the SuperTarget store that is close to their house. We have a Super Walmart, Costco, Sam’s CLub, 2 Safeways, King Soopers, Albertsons, Flatirons Crossings Mall and this Target store— all within a five-mile radius but Target is not my first choice when it comes to shopping mostly because of accessibility reasons. To get there, I have to go through the intersection at Highway 36 and McCaslin Blvd. where there are 3 stoplights and a merging turn where you’re almost assured of running into a driver who is uncertain of who has the right-of-way. I try to avoid it as much as possible.
Anyway, after this visit, I would be going to Target much, much less.
Since I had time to kill, I walked around looking for bargains, trying to think of what I NEED.
Found a nice Ultimate Backpack that was marked down from $24.99 to $6.24. I certainly NEED that.

I said, “Those items are supposed to get 50% off.”
“No, not these ones— only the ones on that one aisle.”
To which I countered, “The sign was right on top of it— 50 percent off and the reduced price will be at checkout.”
“No, not these items.”
I did not want to insist that she was wrong and I was right— I would need to take her to the area that was on the other side of the store to prove my point. So, instead I just said, “Well, I don’t want them, then, please take them out.”
I was paying with my debit card and had already swiped it so the transaction had gone through while we were arguing. But, it didn’t take long, the checker did not have to call a supervisor to void out the previous transaction, she was able to capture the transaction and then took out the items I no longer wanted. It didn’t seem long to me but for a brief second, I wondered what the other people who were behind me in the line thinking of me— “here’s this Asian woman who does not want to pay $9.00 instead of $4.50, can’t even read or understand English…” But, then again, they probably just do not care…
I just wanted to get out of there so I put my grocery sacks in the cart and walked off to direction of where I parked my car.
Wait a minute, let me check on those apples!

I went to Guest Services and showed them my receipt and said that the apples were supposed to be 99 cents per pound. No arguments from the girl at the counter, she calculated how much I am owed back — “Cash ok?” and gave me $4.00. I said, that they should change that price in their system as not everyone pays attention. “Oh, we will.” Did not look like it was a priority for her to do that…
All in all, even with the bargains I got, I do not see myself shopping at Target any time soon AND I will be warning people about them, too.
Mary is my "I'm Not a Baby!" daughter and this is my blog about her and our life in suburban America. Parenting tales, our travels and travails, forays into great and not-so-great restaurants, kitchen adventures--- all chronicled with as much photos as you can stand. Comments are very much appreciated --- let me know you dropped by! Thank you.

Good for you! I always make sure I am standing right there, checking prices as they come up! I haven’t had this kind of an experience before at Target. I have run into similar things at stores like Kohl’s and even Dick’s Sporting goods - the sale was over but they just hadn’t got around to pulling the price tags down. At both places, I refused to pay the price that the register pulled up, telling them that I would be willing to walk them to show them the price they had up. At Dick’s, they actually had someone toodle over and check and we were right! They had the sale prices up long after the sale was over! At Kohl’s the cashier gave me the sale price, too. Like you, I would not have bought those items at the higher price. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pointing it out to them.
I really don’t care what the people in line behind me are thinking. It’s my money, after all!
You go, girl! I hope someone from Target has the decency to reply to the way they operate! I’m guessing this is the one in Superior? Next to Michael’s? If it is, I go there a lot! Hmmmm!
